How to use Canva AI: on-brand designs from a sentence, honestly explained, with 8 prompts to copy

Canva has moved from templates with a few magic buttons to an AI you can talk to about a whole campaign. This guide explains what Canva AI does well today, what it costs you in allowance and privacy, and how to get designs you would actually publish.

The short answer

Canva AI is the AI built into Canva, the Australian online design tool launched in 2013. Since Canva AI 2.0 (research preview from 16 April 2026) you can describe a goal in conversation and get a fully layered, editable design on brand. In October 2026 Canva added two in-house models: Canva Craft for images, available to all users, and Canva Brush for design edits, for Canva Pro subscribers first. AI use draws on a monthly allowance that grows with your plan.

What Canva AI is in November 2026

Most people still meet Canva's AI as a set of buttons inside the editor: Magic Write for text, Magic Resize, Magic Eraser, Background Remover, Translate and so on. Those tools are still there. What changed this year is that Canva now has a conversational layer on top of them. At Canva Create on 16 April 2026, Canva launched Canva AI 2.0 as a research preview, with general availability rolling out over the following weeks. Canva calls it the biggest product launch in its history.

Canva AI 2.0 runs on what Canva calls the Canva Design Model, a foundation model trained to understand the structure and hierarchy of real designs. Four ideas sit underneath it. Conversational design means you start from a brief, a goal or a rough sketch instead of a template. Agentic orchestration means Canva AI picks the right Canva tools for the job and coordinates them, so one request can produce a deck, social posts and a flyer. Layered object intelligence means everything it makes is built from separate, editable elements, so when you ask it to change a headline, only the headline changes. And the Memory Library keeps your preferences and brand so later results need less correction.

October brought two models built by Canva Research, Canva's in-house AI lab of about 160 people. Canva Craft, launched on 22 October 2026, is Canva's first image-generation model. It is available to all Canva users from Dream Lab in the bottom left panel, makes images up to 2K resolution in more than 30 aspect ratios and can render text in 55 languages. Canva Brush, launched on 29 October 2026, is a vision-language model that looks at your design and makes the edits you ask for, from one line of copy to every slide of a deck. It powers supported edits in Canva AI for Canva Pro subscribers, with wider availability promised. Canva says Brush is up to 69% faster and 46% cheaper per edit than its previous design agent; those are Canva's own figures.

Where Canva AI is genuinely strong

Getting from a brief to a full set of assets

The best use of Canva AI is a request with a clear goal and several outputs. Ask for a product launch kit with a presentation, three social posts and an email header, and it produces each format with consistent type, colour and layout. Because the result is made of normal Canva elements, you can fix the one thing that is wrong instead of starting again.

Staying on brand without policing every file

Brand Intelligence applies your fonts, colours and style from the first draft if you connect a brand template or describe the brand. You can also ask Canva AI to apply your latest brand to older designs, which turns a tedious refresh into a single request. Canva Free includes one Brand Kit (limited to three colours), Pro five and Business 100.

Making one design work everywhere

Magic Resize and Translate are among Canva's most useful AI tools for busy teams, and on paid plans they count as Standard AI, which does not draw on your monthly AI allowance (fair use limits apply; the exception is the Pro Lite plan, where Standard AI does use the allowance). With Brush, Canva suggests requests such as turning a presentation slide into an Instagram graphic or changing every header in a multi-page document in one prompt.

Turning images into editable layers

Magic Layers splits an image into separate elements you can move and edit. Canva says Craft was built so its images split into layers more accurately, which makes generated visuals far easier to adjust than a flat picture.

Beyond static design

Canva Code 2.0 builds interactive, responsive experiences from a prompt (a quiz or a simple calculator, for example), imports HTML and can collect form responses into Canva Sheets. Sheets AI drafts structured spreadsheets such as budget trackers and content calendars. Scheduling lets Canva AI run a task in the background, such as a fresh batch of social posts every Friday, and web research gathers information into a design as editable content. Canva also announced connectors to Slack, Gmail, Google Drive, Google Calendar, Notion, Zoom, HubSpot, Microsoft, Atlassian and Linear so Canva AI can work from your own material.

Where Canva AI falls short

  • The allowance is vague. Premium and Ultra AI tools share one monthly allowance. Canva describes it only in multiples: Pro gets 10 times the Free allowance, Business and Enterprise 20 times. More complex tasks use more. You will not know exactly how many generations you have until you run low.
  • The best parts are not on Free. Conversational design with Canva AI and high-quality video clip generation are Ultra AI tools, which the Free plan does not include. A paid trial uses the Free allowance until you start paying.
  • Some features are still rolling out. Canva AI 2.0 launched as a research preview and Brush started with Pro subscribers only. On Canva Enterprise, the pricing page still lists Canva AI 2.0 and Canva AI connectors as coming soon. Do not build a team process around a feature until you can see it in your own account.
  • Research needs checking. When Canva AI pulls in information from the web, treat names, numbers and claims as drafts to verify before anything goes out.
  • It is not a professional illustration tool. For complex vector work, print production or animation, Canva points professionals to its ProSuite tools (Affinity, Cavalry, Flourish and Leonardo), launched as a connected set on 16 September 2026.

How to get better results from Canva AI

  1. Set up your brand first. Add your logo, fonts and colours to a Brand Kit before you prompt. Brand Intelligence can only apply what it knows.
  2. Write a brief, not a wish. Say who the design is for, where it will appear, the one message it must carry and the formats you need. "A launch kit for HR leads, LinkedIn and email, one message: setup takes ten minutes" beats "make a launch post".
  3. Give it your real content. Paste the actual copy, numbers and dates. Canva AI arranges content well, but invented filler text is the fastest way to a generic result.
  4. Edit one element at a time. Because outputs are layered, ask for targeted changes such as "make the headline shorter and bolder" rather than "try again". With Brush, select it from the dropdown in Canva AI so it handles the whole editing pass.
  5. Spend the allowance where it counts. Use Standard tools such as Resize, Translate and Magic Write freely on paid plans, and save Premium and Ultra tools for the first draft and for images.
  6. Review before you publish. Check every fact, every name and every image for things you do not have rights to use.

Privacy settings and the rules for AI-made content

Canva's Trust Center says it uses your user content, such as the text in your designs and the media you upload, and your general usage data to improve its AI features only if that is consistent with your Privacy Settings. You can change this at any time on the Privacy Settings page in your account settings (canva.com/settings/privacy-preferences). Check that page today rather than assuming a default. On Canva Business, Teams and Enterprise the control is switched off and greyed out: Canva says it does not use business, team or enterprise content to improve AI features and does not let third parties do so either. Canva Education student content is never used. Third-party apps inside Canva follow their own privacy policies, not Canva's, so check an app before you connect it.

On ownership, Canva's help centre says that, between you and Canva, you own what you create with its AI and may use it commercially under its AI Product Terms. It also warns that AI-made work may not be protected by copyright in some countries, that other people can get similar results from similar prompts, and that you should not reference known brands, characters or real people without permission. Canva Enterprise adds AI output indemnity and IP indemnity, both from a minimum of 100 seats.

Which Canva plan suits whom

PlanGood forAI you get
Canva FreeOccasional personal designs and trying the AILimited Standard and Premium AI, no Ultra AI
Canva ProOne person who designs every weekFull Standard AI, 10x the Free allowance for Premium and Ultra AI, Brush first
Canva BusinessSmall teams and marketers20x the Free allowance, Canva Grow ad insights, content not used to improve AI features
Canva EnterpriseLarge organisations20x the Free allowance, AI admin controls, SSO, SCIM, audit logs; Canva AI 2.0 and its connectors are marked as coming soon

Pick Pro if you work alone and design every week, because it is the plan where Brush is available first and where the paid Standard tools stop counting against your allowance. Pick Business as soon as two or more people share brand assets or you handle client material, since its content is excluded from AI improvement. If you keep running out of allowance, Canva sells AI Pass, a monthly add-on for Pro and Business that Canva says gives 40 times more AI than Pro or 20 times more than Business. Canva Teams is closed to new sign-ups. See Canva's pricing page for current prices.
