The short answer
Gamma vs Canva: pick Gamma, made by Gamma Tech Inc., when you need a presentation, document or simple webpage drafted from notes or a file, because its agent (rebuilt in Gamma 5, announced 6 October 2026) plans, researches and lays out the whole thing. Pick Canva when the output is a branded design you will publish, because Canva AI 2.0, the Canva Craft image model (22 October 2026) and Brand Kits keep every format on brand and editable.

The short version: two tools that overlap on slides only
Gamma started as an AI presentation maker and is still, at heart, a tool for turning ideas and documents into decks, documents and simple webpages. Since Gamma 5, which Gamma announced on 6 October 2026, an agent plans the piece, can research it on the web, writes it and designs it, and you then refine it by chat or by hand. Gamma does not name one model; it says it draws on more than 20 models from Anthropic, OpenAI and Google, and you choose how hard it works with an effort picker (Lite, Standard or Max).
Canva is a design platform first. Its AI layer, Canva AI 2.0, launched as a research preview on 16 April 2026 and lets you describe a goal in conversation and get back layered, editable designs in many formats at once. In October 2026 Canva added two in-house models: Canva Craft for images on 22 October, open to all users, and Canva Brush for design edits on 29 October, for Canva Pro subscribers first.
So the two meet on presentations and then go their separate ways. Gamma goes deeper on the story and the structure of a deck. Canva goes wider, into social posts, print, video, brand management and images. Below is the winner for each kind of work, with the reason. Everything here comes from the makers' own pricing, help and announcement pages; we have not run timed tests, and you should not trust anyone who claims a universal speed winner.
Turning a document or notes into a first deck: Gamma wins
This is Gamma's home ground. Paste notes, upload a PDF or point it at an old PowerPoint and the agent builds a full deck. In the default Plan mode it asks you questions and shows a plan before it designs anything, which catches a wrong audience or the wrong length early. Express mode skips the questions and goes straight to a draft. Gamma 5 also added automatic checks for overflowing text and badly cropped images, two of the most common faults in AI decks.
Canva can do this too: ask Canva AI to turn a document into a ten-slide presentation and it will. But conversational design is an Ultra AI tool, which the Canva Free plan does not include, and Canva's strength is the look rather than the argument. If the hard part of your deck is deciding what goes on each slide, Gamma does more of that work for you.
A researched briefing or report deck: Gamma wins, with a warning
Gamma's Research mode runs deep web research before it writes, but only on Pro and above, and only from Plan mode. On the Max effort level Gamma says it uses its strongest models and deeper research with fact checking. Canva AI can also gather information from the web into a design as editable content, which is useful for a one-pager.
Gamma wins because research is built into how it plans a deck, not added as one step. The warning applies to both tools: Gamma's own help centre notes that web search cannot be fully switched off, and researched content can still be wrong. Check every name, number and date before the deck leaves your desk. If you need sourced research rather than slides, start in a research tool and bring the findings over; our guide to the best AI for research covers that step.
On-brand marketing assets and social posts: Canva wins clearly
Ask Canva AI for a launch kit with a deck, three social posts and an email header and it produces every format with consistent type and colour. Brand Intelligence applies your fonts, colours and style from the first draft, and you can ask it to bring older designs up to your latest brand. Canva Free includes one Brand Kit (limited to three colours), Pro five and Business 100. Magic Resize and Translate then adapt one design for every channel, and on paid plans these Standard tools do not draw on your AI allowance (Pro Lite is the exception).
Gamma can make social posts, and Business workspaces can share custom themes, but it has nothing like Canva's range of formats, stock library, scheduling or resizing. For anything that ends up on a feed, a billboard or a printed flyer, Canva is the better tool.
Images inside your design: Canva wins
Canva Craft makes images up to 2K resolution in more than 30 aspect ratios and can render text in 55 languages, from Dream Lab in the bottom left panel. Canva says Craft was built so its images split into separate layers more accurately with Magic Layers, which means a generated picture becomes editable elements rather than a flat file.
Gamma generates images too: its help centre says Lite and Standard effort use GPT Image 2 Mini and Max uses GPT Image 2, and Imagine gives you a separate canvas for standalone graphics on every plan except Business and Enterprise. That is enough for slide visuals. Canva wins because the images arrive inside a full editor with layers, stock, brand colours and background tools.
A deck you must hand over as a PowerPoint file: Gamma wins narrowly
Both tools export to PowerPoint. Gamma also exports to Google Slides and PDF, its August 2026 update made tables stay editable in PowerPoint, and its 26 October 2026 changelog lists better PowerPoint and Google Slides exports. Canva downloads presentations (not other design types) as PPTX, but its own help centre warns that PPTX files may look different when opened in PowerPoint, that you may need to install the fonts you used, and that animations and embedded videos are not supported there.
Gamma gets the edge because it documents more work on the export path. Either way, open the exported file in PowerPoint before you send it and fix fonts and spacing yourself. If your company insists on a strict corporate template, read our guide to Gamma alternatives, because Copilot in PowerPoint may suit you better than either.
Using it for free: Canva wins
Canva Free gives you a monthly AI allowance for Standard and Premium tools that refreshes, plus the full editor, templates and 5 GB of storage. You lose the Ultra AI tools, including conversational design with Canva AI, but you can keep using Canva for free indefinitely.
Gamma Free gives you 400 credits when you sign up, and they do not refresh. You can earn 200 more per referral, up to 2,000 held, and manual editing never costs credits. Free and Plus get the Lite and Standard effort levels, and Free is capped at 10 slides per prompt. That is plenty to judge Gamma on two or three real decks, but not a way to work for free month after month. Check Gamma's pricing page and Canva's pricing page for current prices.
Teams and collaboration: Canva wins for marketing teams, Gamma for idea-heavy teams
Canva Business gives each team 20 times the Free AI allowance, 100 Brand Kits and content excluded from AI improvement; Canva Enterprise adds SSO, SCIM, audit logs and AI admin controls, although its pricing page still marks Canva AI 2.0 and Canva AI connectors as coming soon for Enterprise. Gamma Business gives 10,000 credits per member a month, a shared workspace, team themes and SSO, and Enterprise adds SCIM and audit logs. Gamma's Slack app lets anyone mention Gamma in a thread to start a deck from it.
If your team produces lots of branded output, Canva is the safer shared tool. If your team mostly produces internal decks, briefings and proposals from meeting notes, Gamma's agent and connectors (Slack, Notion, Granola and 20 or more other tools) will save more time.
Privacy and your content
Gamma's help centre says content on Free, Plus, Pro and Ultra may be used to train AI models by default, and you can opt out at any time: click your avatar or initials at the lower left of the dashboard, then Settings, then the Data Controls tab. Business and Enterprise workspaces are opted out and the setting is locked.
Canva's Trust Center says it uses your content to improve AI features only if that is consistent with your Privacy Settings, which you change at canva.com/settings/privacy-preferences. Canva does not state the default on the pages we used, so look at that page today. Business, Teams and Enterprise content is not used, and the control is greyed out. Our verdict: on any personal plan, open the setting in both tools on day one; for client work, use a business plan in either tool.
Same task, both tools: a product launch for a small software company
Take one brief: launch a new feature to existing customers, with a six-slide customer webinar deck, three LinkedIn posts and an email header. This is how each tool handles it according to its documentation, not a timed test.
In Gamma
- You paste the release notes into the agent in Plan mode. Gamma asks you questions and shows a plan of the six slides for you to approve.
- It writes and designs the deck, runs its checks for overflowing text and bad crops, and uses GPT Image 2 Mini for images at Standard effort.
- You ask for a restyle in chat, which keeps the content, or fix a slide by hand, which costs no credits.
- You export the deck to PowerPoint or Google Slides for the webinar. For the LinkedIn posts and email header you make social posts in Gamma or switch to a design tool, because Gamma does not resize one design into many channel formats.
In Canva
- You connect your Brand Kit first, then give Canva AI the brief and the release notes and ask for all five assets at once.
- Canva AI builds each format as layered, editable designs on brand, and you generate a hero image with Canva Craft that splits into layers.
- You edit one element at a time, or on Pro select Brush from the dropdown to apply one change across every slide.
- You present the deck from Canva or download it as PPTX, then schedule the LinkedIn posts from Canva.
The pattern is clear. Gamma does more of the thinking on the deck itself. Canva does more of the production across formats. Plenty of teams use both: Gamma to draft the argument, Canva to dress the campaign.
Who should pick Gamma and who should pick Canva
- Pick Gamma if you are a consultant, founder, manager, teacher or analyst who mainly needs presentations, briefings and proposals, and the hard part is structure rather than styling. Choose Pro if you need Research mode.
- Pick Canva if you are a marketer, small business owner, social media manager or designer whose output is published visuals in many formats, and brand consistency matters more than slide logic.
- Pick Canva Free if you need an AI design tool you can keep using at no cost.
- Do not pick either if your organisation demands decks built in its own PowerPoint master; start with Copilot in PowerPoint or Gemini in Google Slides instead.
