The short answer
ChatGPT vs Midjourney: use ChatGPT Images 2.5, released by OpenAI on 8 September 2026 and available on every ChatGPT plan including Free, for practical work images such as posters with text, edits to your own photos and quick visuals you shape in conversation. Use Midjourney V8.2, the default model since 24 July 2026, for striking, art-directed images, a consistent visual style across a campaign and short animated clips. Midjourney has no free plan, and its images are public unless you pay for Stealth Mode.

Two very different ways to make an image
ChatGPT Images is the image feature inside ChatGPT, OpenAI's assistant. You ask for an image in a normal conversation, or open Images from the sidebar, and you refine it by talking. OpenAI launched ChatGPT Images 2.0 on 21 April 2026 for all plans, and on 8 September 2026 released ChatGPT Images 2.5, which OpenAI says brings sharper details, more precise editing and faster generation. It added templates (Images, then Templates), sketch-to-image on mobile, editing and commenting on mobile, and shareable prompts. Images with thinking is on Plus, Pro and Business, with Enterprise and Edu to follow. The old DALL·E GPT was retired on 30 August 2026.
Midjourney is a dedicated image and video generator from Midjourney, Inc. You use it on midjourney.com or in Discord. Its default model is V8.2, released on 24 July 2026 with a focus on aesthetics, image quality and personalisation, and on 27 August 2026 Midjourney opened a V8.2 edit model to everyone. Midjourney has four paid plans (Basic, Standard, Pro and Mega) measured in fast GPU hours, from 3.3 hours a month on Basic to 60 on Mega.
That difference shapes everything below. ChatGPT is the better tool when the image serves a task and you want to get there by describing it. Midjourney is the better tool when the image is the point and you care about its look. None of the verdicts here come from timed or side-by-side tests; they come from what each maker documents.
Images with words in them: ChatGPT wins
Posters, event graphics, slide visuals, labels and simple infographics live or die on readable text. OpenAI's help centre says ChatGPT Images can follow instructions to add text and details within an image, and Images 2.5 adds templates for formats such as posters and logos, where ChatGPT may ask follow-up questions about style before it draws. You can then select part of the image and ask for a change, such as a corrected word.
Midjourney handles text too: put the exact words in quotation marks. Midjourney says text rendering improved in V8, but its own text guide says shorter words and phrases have a better chance of appearing correctly, and you have no conversation in which to fix one wrong letter. For any image where the words matter, start in ChatGPT.
Editing your own photos: ChatGPT wins for speed, Midjourney for style
In ChatGPT you upload a photo and describe what should change, or use the selection tool to highlight an area first. OpenAI warns that highlights are not always precise and edits can spread beyond the area you selected, so check the edges. You can also regenerate an image in a different aspect ratio from the editor. For everyday jobs, such as removing a stray object, changing a background or producing a square version, this is the quicker route.
Midjourney's V8.2 edit model takes plain instructions, up to four image references, inpainting and outpainting, and it works with your personalisation profile, moodboards and style references. Pick it when the edited image has to match the look of a set you made in Midjourney. For a quick fix to a photo, ChatGPT is the better tool.
Striking, art-directed images: Midjourney wins clearly
Concept art, editorial illustration, mood images for a pitch and campaign key visuals are where Midjourney earns its fee. It gives you direct controls that ChatGPT does not: --stylize from 0 to 1000 for how much of Midjourney's own aesthetic to apply, --raw for less of it, --chaos from 0 to 100 for variety between the four results, --weird for experimental looks and --no for things to leave out. HD mode renders at 2048 pixels. If you want a picture that makes people stop scrolling, and you have time to explore variations, Midjourney is the stronger choice.
A consistent style across many images: Midjourney wins
A campaign needs ten images that look like they belong together. Midjourney is built for this. Style reference codes (--sref, with --sw for weight) let you reuse a look, moodboards collect the images that define it, personalisation learns your taste from your ratings, and you can set default parameters so every prompt starts from the same settings. Its --tile parameter, improved for V8.1 and V8.2, makes repeating patterns that join without visible seams, for backgrounds and packaging.
In ChatGPT you can keep a style going inside one conversation and upload a reference image, but there is no equivalent of a reusable style code. For a series, Midjourney wins.
Moving images: Midjourney wins by default
Midjourney's video model animates an image into a 5-second clip that you can extend four seconds at a time up to 21 seconds, with --motion low or high and --loop. Standard definition is 480p; HD at 720p needs Standard or a higher plan and runs in Fast mode, and Relax-mode video needs Pro or Mega. ChatGPT Images makes still images only, so for a moving social post from a single picture, Midjourney is the one of these two that can do it. For proper video work, see our guide to the best AI for video.
Using it for free: ChatGPT wins
OpenAI says ChatGPT Images is available on all tiers, the Free plan includes limited image creation, and the Go plan adds more image creation. Midjourney has no free plan and no free trial on the web or Discord; a limited trial exists only in the separate niji·journey app. If you want to try AI images today without paying, ChatGPT is the answer. See ChatGPT's pricing and Midjourney's plan comparison for current prices.
Privacy, ownership and client work: ChatGPT wins
Images you make in ChatGPT are saved to your own Images library, not to a public gallery. On Free, Plus and Pro, OpenAI's setting Improve the model for everyone is on by default; turn it off in Settings, then Data controls. Business, Enterprise and Edu content is not used for training by default. OpenAI's Terms of Use (effective 1 January 2026) say that, as between you and OpenAI, you own the output, while warning that other people may get similar output.
On Midjourney, images are public on midjourney.com unless you use Stealth Mode, which only Pro and Mega include, and switching Stealth on does not hide images you made earlier: you have to make each one private by hand on the Organize page. Its Terms of Service (effective 27 May 2026) grant Midjourney a perpetual, worldwide licence to what you put in and what you create, and companies with more than USD 1,000,000 in gross annual revenue must use Pro or Mega to own their assets. For unreleased products or client work, ChatGPT on a business plan is the safer place to start, and Midjourney only makes sense on Pro or Mega with Stealth switched on.
Same task, both tools: three jobs a marketing team does every week
Here is how each tool handles three common jobs according to its documentation. These are descriptions of the workflow, not test results.
A webinar poster with a headline and date
In ChatGPT you open Images, then Templates, pick a poster template and type the title, date and speaker. ChatGPT may ask about the visual style, then draws it; you select the date if it is wrong and ask for a fix. In Midjourney you write the scene, put the headline in quotation marks, add --ar 4:5 and pick the best of four results, then use the edit model if a word is off. ChatGPT gets you to a usable poster with fewer steps.
Six hero images for a campaign in one look
In Midjourney you create the first image, keep its style with --sref or a moodboard, set your defaults and generate the other five scenes with the same settings, then animate one for social. In ChatGPT you describe the look, upload the first image as a reference for each new one and keep it in one conversation. Midjourney keeps the look steadier across the set.
Swap the background of a product photo
In ChatGPT you upload the photo, select the background and ask for a plain studio backdrop in your brand colour. In Midjourney you attach the photo to the edit model and describe the new background. Both work; ChatGPT is quicker, and your photo is never posted to a public gallery.
Who should pick ChatGPT and who should pick Midjourney
- Pick ChatGPT if you need images as part of everyday work: posters, slide visuals, social graphics with text, product photo edits and quick mock-ups. It suits anyone already paying for ChatGPT, and anyone who wants to start for free.
- Pick Midjourney if you are a designer, art director, illustrator or brand team that cares most about the look, needs a consistent style across many images or wants short animated clips from stills. Budget for Pro if the work is confidential.
- Pick both if you explore looks in Midjourney and then produce the text-heavy, practical versions in ChatGPT or a design tool such as Canva.
- Pick neither if you need images that are designed to be commercially safe for large brands; look at Adobe Firefly in our Midjourney vs Adobe Firefly comparison.
