The short answer
Meta AI is Meta's free AI assistant, built into WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger and Threads and available in the Meta AI app, on meta.ai and on Ray-Ban Meta glasses. Since April 2026 it runs on Muse Spark, with Muse Spark 1.1 powering Thinking mode since July. It is best for quick help inside chats, photos and shopping ideas. The catch is privacy: Meta uses your Meta AI chats to personalise ads.

What Meta AI is in late 2026
Meta AI is the assistant that Meta puts inside the apps billions of people already open every day: WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger and Threads. It is also a standalone Meta AI app, a website at meta.ai, and the voice in Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta glasses. You do not need to sign up for anything new to try it, which is the main reason so many people have used Meta AI without ever choosing it.
The engine changed this year. On 8 April 2026 Meta launched Muse Spark, the first model in the Muse series from Meta Superintelligence Labs, to power Meta AI. Meta describes it as small and fast by design but capable of complex reasoning. It offers two modes: Instant for quick answers and Thinking for harder questions. On 12 May Meta began bringing Muse Spark to Meta AI in WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger and Threads, with a gradual rollout to Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta glasses in the US and Canada. On 9 July Meta released Muse Spark 1.1, a multimodal reasoning model built for agentic tasks with a 1-million-token context window, in Thinking mode in the Meta AI app and on meta.ai.
One naming trap: Meta has since released Muse Spark 1.2 (5 August) and Muse Spark 1.3 (2 September), but its announcements put them in Muse Code, its coding agent, and the Meta Model API for developers. Meta has not said that either one powers Meta AI, so do not assume the chat in WhatsApp runs on the newest version number you read about.
Then on 24 July Meta added features that turn Meta AI from a chatbot into something closer to an assistant that follows through: plans with next steps, daily briefings of your calendar, recurring tasks such as weekly meal plans, and connections to email and calendar apps. These began in select markets in the Meta AI app and on meta.ai, which Meta did not name, with WhatsApp and more countries to follow, so check if you have them.
Meta AI, Muse and Meta One: three names to keep apart
Meta now has three things with similar names, and mixing them up leads to wrong expectations.
| Product | What it is | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Meta AI | The assistant inside Meta's apps, the Meta AI app and meta.ai, powered by Muse Spark | Free for everyday use |
| Meta One | Subscriptions announced on 15 September 2026. Core and Premium add more Meta AI image and video generation and higher AI allowances | Paid plans |
| Muse | A separate personal agent at muse.ai, in iOS and Android apps and in WhatsApp chats, launched in the US only on 8 September 2026, that can send emails, fill in forms and make purchases | Free tier plus paid Power and Maximum tiers |
Meta says plainly that "Meta AI will still be free for everyday use." Meta One Core bundles Instagram Plus, Facebook Plus and WhatsApp Plus features with more Meta AI image and video generation, more Restyle edits for Instagram Stories and more voice effects. Meta One Premium gives the largest allowance for creating content with Meta AI across Meta's apps. Meta declined to publish exact usage limits and told TechCrunch they can vary by country, surface and system conditions. For businesses, the Essential, Advanced, Expert and Max bundles add Meta Business Agent, which answers customers on WhatsApp around the clock. See Meta's Meta One announcement for current prices.
Muse is a different product with its own app and brand. It runs on Muse Spark, connects to email, calendars, payments and other services you choose one at a time, and can keep working after you leave the app. Since 12 October 2026, paying Muse subscribers and Meta Model API customers can use Muse Wonder, which Meta calls its most advanced option for powering digital assistants. None of that changes what the free Meta AI in WhatsApp can do.
Where Meta AI is genuinely strong
Help without leaving the chat you are in
The biggest advantage is location. If your team, clients or family already talk on WhatsApp, you can ask Meta AI to draft a reply, translate a message or explain a term without switching apps. In group chats Meta has tested side chats, where you tap the Meta AI icon and get a private answer based on that conversation, which is useful for catching up on a long thread.
Questions about what is in front of you
Meta AI is multimodal. Point your phone camera at something with Live AI and ask questions about it in real time. Meta's own examples include ranking airport snacks in a photo by protein and estimating calories from a picture of food, and Meta says it worked with physicians on health answers. On Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta glasses this works hands-free, which is the most natural form of it.
Shopping, local ideas and social trends
Meta AI draws on public posts, creators and communities across Meta's apps. Shopping mode suggests outfits, room ideas and gifts, lets you @ a brand or creator to browse their content, and can search nearby Facebook Marketplace listings, show them on a map and filter by price, style or distance. For a small business owner checking what people are posting about a trend, this is a genuine edge that general assistants do not have.
Free images and quick visuals
Meta AI creates images and short videos with Meta's Muse models. For social posts, thumbnails and mood boards it is a fast free option, and Meta One adds more generations if you hit the limit.
Simple web pages and mini-games
Meta AI can also generate a simple website or mini-game from a prompt, and since July it can make slide decks and mood boards. That is handy for a quick event page or a visual brief, though it is no substitute for a real coding or design tool.
Planning that follows through
Since July, in markets that have it, Meta AI can build a plan and keep you on it. Meta's examples include a week-by-week half-marathon schedule shared every Monday morning and a daily briefing that flags double bookings in your calendar. You can steer it while it works, changing the focus or tone or cutting a section.
Where it falls short
- No real work plan. There is no Meta AI plan for employees with admin controls and contractual data protection like Microsoft 365 Copilot or ChatGPT Business. Meta One's business bundles are for businesses that sell and talk to customers on Meta's apps, not for staff working on internal documents.
- Your chats feed advertising. Meta uses your text and voice chats with Meta AI to personalise ads and content across its apps. That is the trade for a free assistant.
- Uneven availability. Modes and features often launch in the US first, and the July planning features started in markets Meta did not list. What a colleague in another country sees may not match your screen.
- Long documents and serious analysis. Meta AI is built around chats, photos and quick tasks. For a 40-page contract or a messy spreadsheet, a tool like ChatGPT or Claude is a better fit. See Meta AI vs ChatGPT.
- Limits are not published. Meta does not say how many images or Thinking answers you get, so heavy users only find out when they hit a wall.
How to get better results from Meta AI
- Pick the right mode. Use Instant for quick facts and replies. Switch to Thinking for anything with several steps, such as a plan, a comparison or a calculation.
- Give it the context the chat does not have. Meta AI in a WhatsApp chat does not know your goals. Say who the reply is for, what you want and the tone, for example "friendly, under 60 words, says no to Friday".
- Show it a picture. For anything physical, from a broken appliance to a shelf of products, a photo plus a question beats a long description.
- Ask for the format you need. A checklist, a table, a week-by-week plan or three options to choose from. Meta AI follows format instructions well when you state them up front.
- Use Incognito for one-off private questions. Meta offers Incognito chats for private conversations. Use them for anything you would not want tied to your account.
- Check facts before you share. Ask where an answer came from and verify names, prices and dates, especially for anything you will post publicly.

Privacy settings and where to find them
This is the part to read twice. Since December 2025, Meta has used text and voice chats with Meta AI to personalise ads across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger. Engadget reported in September 2026 that Meta does not let US users opt out of AI training at all, and that the only option there is not to use Meta AI. Users in the UK and EU can object to their information being used for Meta AI training through a form in Meta's Privacy Center, under GDPR protections; Engadget links it at facebook.com/privacy/genai.
How to object on Instagram, according to a 404 Media guide from 28 October 2026: in the mobile app, tap the three lines on your profile, open the Privacy Center and choose Object, then fill in the form saying why. On desktop, open privacycenter.instagram.com, select Submit a privacy rights request, choose Instagram, then How can I object to the processing of my information?, and pick the option for Meta AI (third-party data is a separate option). Meta emails you when the objection is accepted. 404 Media found the form only appears for accounts in certain regions and warned the steps may change, and Meta has not published an official step-by-step guide we could open, so treat these as a starting point.
Inside Meta AI you can start an Incognito chat for private conversations. The separate Muse agent works differently: Meta says Muse does not share conversations or data with its ads systems, and it runs tasks on a dedicated virtual machine. Those are Meta's claims, and security experts have yet to examine them independently.
Our rule of thumb: never paste customer data, contracts, passwords, health details or anything confidential into Meta AI. Use it for public information, personal planning and creative work.
Which plan suits whom
- Most people: the free Meta AI is enough. It costs nothing and is already on your phone.
- Heavy creators: Meta One Core or Premium make sense if you regularly run out of image and video generations or use Restyle and voice effects for content.
- Businesses selling on WhatsApp or Instagram: look at Meta One's business bundles for Meta Business Agent access, but treat them as customer-messaging tools, not an internal AI assistant.
- Teams handling confidential work: Meta AI is not for you. Use a work plan with data protection, such as Microsoft 365 Copilot or ChatGPT Business, and keep Meta AI for public and personal tasks. See our comparison tool to choose.
