What Ideogram is in late 2026
Ideogram is an AI image generator from Ideogram, Inc., a company based in Toronto. Since its launch in 2023 it has had one reputation above all others: it is unusually good at putting readable, correctly spelled words into images. That makes it the tool people reach for when the text matters as much as the picture, such as a poster, a YouTube thumbnail, a flyer or a logo idea.
In 2026 Ideogram became a broader studio. The app opens on Auto, which picks a model for you. You can also choose a model yourself:
- Ideogram 4.5 is the flagship, which Ideogram calls its most capable model for design work and precise editing. It accepts up to five reference images, so you can edit a photo or combine several images, and its Precise Edit app lets you mask the exact area to change.
- Ideogram 4.0, released on 3 June 2026, was Ideogram's first open-weight model. It handles very wide formats such as 23:9 and 3:1, which suits banners and website headers.
- Ideogram 3.0 is the only model with style presets, style reference images, negative prompts and colour palettes, which makes it the best choice for logos and brand graphics.
- Partner models include GPT Image 2.0, GPT Image 2.5 Flare and Sunburst, Nano Banana 2 and Nano Banana Pro. These are premium and need a paid plan or bought credits.
There is also a Video app with Seedance 2.5, Seedance 2.0, Kling v3 Standard and MiniMax H3, a Background Remover, upscaling to 4K and 8K for transparent designs, Custom Models trained on your own images and an Ideogram MCP server that lets AI assistants make images for you.
What Ideogram is best at
Graphics where the words must be right
Event posters, sale banners, book covers, menu boards and thumbnails all depend on lettering. Ideogram's own guidance is simple: put the exact words in quotation marks, mention them early in the prompt and say where they sit. Short phrases come out most reliably. If one letter is still wrong, you can fix it with a targeted edit or an editable text layer in Studio rather than generating again.
Logo and brand exploration
With Ideogram 3.0 you can lock a colour palette, add a style reference and use a negative prompt to keep out what you do not want. That is a fast way to explore twenty logo directions before a designer refines the best two. Treat the results as concepts: Ideogram downloads are JPEG or PNG image files, so a designer still has to redraw the chosen idea as a vector logo.
Print-on-demand and stickers
Ideogram 4.0 Transparent produces designs with no background, which you can upscale and download as PNG. That suits t-shirts, mugs, stickers and icons.
Editing product photos
With Ideogram 4.5 you can upload a product photo and ask for a new background, a seasonal setting or a cleaned-up version, keeping the product itself intact.
Where Ideogram falls short
- Free means public. On the free plan, everything you generate is public. Plus, Pro, Team and Enterprise keep new images private until you publish them.
- Long text still slips. Ideogram says each extra word raises the odds of a typo. Paragraphs of body copy belong in a design tool, not in the image.
- The best extras cost more. Partner models, video, custom models, reference-image edits and upscales all need credits, even on paid plans once your monthly allowance runs out.
- Commercial use is your risk. Ideogram's terms of service say it claims no ownership of what you make and does not restrict commercial use, but it disclaims any liability for commercial use, and its help centre tells you to read the terms first.
How to get better results from Ideogram
- Quote the words. Write the text exactly as it should appear, inside quotation marks, with the capitals you want.
- Put the text first. Text named near the start of the prompt renders more reliably than text added at the end.
- Say where it goes. "Curving along the bottom" or "painted across the wall behind her" gives the model a place for the words.
- Describe the lettering, not a font name. "Bold rounded sans-serif in deep green" works better than naming a font file.
- Keep the scene simple. A busy background leaves less room for clean lettering.
- Pick the model for the job. Ideogram 3.0 for brand styles, 4.0 for wide banners, 4.5 for edits and references.
Our Ideogram lessons practise these habits, and the best AI for logo design compares it with other options.
Ideogram privacy: public by default on the free plan
The setting that matters most on Ideogram is visibility. Free accounts publish everything to the community feed. On a paid plan new images stay private until you choose to publish them, and if you later cancel, images you already made private stay private. Some team workspaces can switch publishing off entirely, which is worth doing for agencies. Training is the other point to know. Ideogram's privacy policy, last revised on 15 January 2025, lists training the models that power its services among the ways it may use the information it collects, which includes your prompts and other input, and it describes no opt-out. So keep confidential material, such as unreleased products, out of uploads and prompts.
Which Ideogram plan suits whom
- Free: 30 credits a week if you sign in with Google, Apple or Microsoft. Accounts made with an email and password get no free credits. Good for trying Ideogram, not for client work.
- Plus: 2,400 credits a month, private generation and quality export. Right for most marketers and small businesses.
- Pro: 7,500 credits a month, Batch Generation and a larger queue. For people producing images in bulk, such as print-on-demand sellers.
- Team: 3,600 credits per user a month, minimum two users, with central billing.
On Plus, Pro and Team you can keep using Ideogram's own models in a slower queue after your credits run out. Check Ideogram's pricing page for current prices. For a head-to-head, see Midjourney vs Ideogram, or read our Adobe Firefly guide if commercial safety is your main concern.
