The short answer
Using AI on your phone starts with the official ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude app and a quick privacy check: in ChatGPT, sidebar, profile icon, Settings, Data controls; in Claude, Settings, Privacy; in Gemini, Keep Activity in Gemini Apps Activity. Gemini Live, opened with the Live button on Android, adds free voice, camera and screen sharing. ChatGPT includes voice on every plan, and since 20 October 2026 it can lock private chats behind a PIN.
What you need before you start
- The official app. ChatGPT (OpenAI), Gemini (Google) and Claude (Anthropic) all have iOS and Android apps. Install from the App Store or Google Play and check the developer name, because copycat apps with similar icons exist.
- The same account you use on your computer, so your chats, projects and settings follow you.
- Two minutes for privacy settings, which are set per account but easiest to check right after you install.
- Headphones if you plan to use voice in public.
The phone is where AI is most useful in short bursts: talking through an idea on a walk, pointing the camera at something you do not understand, catching up on email between meetings. It is not where you should edit a long report.
How to set up AI on your phone, step by step
- Install and sign in to the app you use most. If you use more than one, start with one and add another later.
- Check the training setting. In the ChatGPT app, open the sidebar, tap your profile icon, then Settings, then Data controls, and decide on Improve the model for everyone; voice has its own separate control. In the Claude app, open your name menu, then Settings, then Privacy, and set Help Improve our AI models. For Gemini, the setting is Keep Activity in Gemini Apps Activity at myactivity.google.com/product/gemini.
- Lock private chats. Since 20 October 2026, ChatGPT's locked chats hide chosen chats behind a 4-digit PIN on Free, Go, Plus and Pro. Useful if someone else ever uses your phone.
- Set up voice. In the Gemini app on Android, tap Live at the bottom, or swipe left, or say "Hey Google, let's talk Live". To change the voice, open the menu, then your profile picture or initial, then Settings, then Gemini's Voice, and tap Confirm. ChatGPT includes voice on every plan, with limits on Free.
- Use the camera and screen. In a Gemini Live chat, tap Camera to show it what you see, and Switch to rear or front camera to flip lenses. Tap Turn on screen sharing, or choose Share screen with Live, to ask about whatever is on your screen; tap Turn off screen sharing when you are done.
- Connect only what you need. Since 27 October 2026, ChatGPT's iCloud Mail and iCloud Calendar plugins work on every plan, including on iOS, so you can ask it to find an email or move an event. Add one account, try it for a week, then decide.
- Pick up work you started on your computer. In the new Claude experience, rolling out first to Pro, Max and Ultra, a task you start at your desk shows up in the Claude mobile app, and cloud and scheduled tasks keep running with your computer off, so you can check progress from your phone. Tasks that use files or apps on your computer still need Claude Desktop open.
Five things AI does best on a phone
- Think out loud. Talk through a presentation on a walk with Gemini Live or ChatGPT voice, then ask for the structure as bullet points to paste later.
- Understand what is in front of you. Point the camera at a menu in another language, an error message on a machine or a chart on a whiteboard and ask what it means.
- Triage email between meetings. With a mail plugin or connector, ask for the three emails that need a reply today and a one-line draft for each. Send nothing without reading it.
- Capture ideas. Dictate a messy voice note and ask for a tidy to-do list or a draft message.
- Practise a conversation. Rehearse a difficult call or a language lesson by voice. See how to learn a language with AI.
Worked example: a train journey before a client meeting
You have 25 minutes on a train before meeting a prospective client. In the ChatGPT app, you paste the client's website "About" text and ask for five smart questions to open the meeting. You switch to voice with headphones and ask it to play the client while you practise your two-minute introduction twice, then ask for honest feedback on clarity. At the station, you ask for a three-line summary of your plan to read in the lift. You never typed more than a sentence, and you arrive prepared.
Newer phone features worth knowing
- Texting your agent. Since 28 October 2026, US ChatGPT Pro users can text their dot, an always-on agent, over iMessage or RCS in a beta.
- Proactive help. Claude Duet, a research preview powered by Claude Opus 5.5 on iOS, Android and the web, is open by waitlist to Pro, Max and Ultra users in the US. Anthropic says it asks before sending messages or paying.
- In the car. Microsoft's Copilot app now works on Apple CarPlay for hands-free use, added in September 2026.
- Talking to your notes. Gemini Notebook's real-time voice conversations in the Android and iOS apps started with Google AI Ultra subscribers aged 18 and over, with Pro and others to follow.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
- Downloading a lookalike app. Fix: check the developer is OpenAI, Google or Anthropic before you sign in.
- Using voice for confidential calls in public. Fix: wait until you are somewhere private, and remember voice has its own data control in ChatGPT.
- Sharing your whole screen. Fix: close banking apps and private messages before you turn on screen sharing.
- Letting an assistant act on email from a small screen. Fix: draft on the phone, review and send on a bigger screen, or at least read every word.
- Trusting a camera translation for allergies or medicine. Fix: use it as a guide, and ask staff or a pharmacist to confirm.
Which AI app to put on your phone
Pick Gemini if you use Android and Google apps; Gemini Live gives you voice, camera and screen sharing on the free plan. Pick ChatGPT as the best all-rounder, especially on iPhone with iCloud Mail and Calendar. Pick Claude if you already work in Claude on your computer and want to follow tasks on the go. On WhatsApp or Instagram, Meta AI is already there, but Meta uses those chats to personalise ads and content. Prepare on the move
I meet [client or person] in 20 minutes about [topic]. Here is what I know: [paste or say]. Give me five sharp questions to ask, two likely objections with a one-line answer each, and a three-line summary I can read just before I walk in.
You get: Meeting prep you can read in the lift
Explain what the camera sees
Look at this [photo or camera view]. Tell me what it is, what it means in plain English, and what, if anything, I should do next. Say clearly if you are unsure.
You get: A quick read on a sign, error message, menu or chart
Voice note to action list
Here is a rambling voice note: [dictate]. Turn it into a to-do list with the three most important items first, and draft any message I said I need to send, under 80 words each.
You get: Tidy actions and drafts from a walk-and-talk
Inbox triage
Look at today's emails in my connected inbox. Show me the three that most need a reply, why, and a short draft reply for each. Do not send anything.
You get: A focused inbox; needs a connected mail account
