ChatGPT now works with iCloud Mail and Calendar: how to connect it safely and what it can do

OpenAI has added iCloud Mail and iCloud Calendar plugins to ChatGPT, so iPhone users finally get the inbox and calendar help that Gmail users have had for a while. Here is what each plugin does, how to set it up with an app-specific password, and the limits worth knowing.

On 27 October 2026, OpenAI added two new plugins to ChatGPT, one for iCloud Mail and one for iCloud Calendar. According to Engadget and MacRumors, they are available on every ChatGPT plan, including Free, on the web, in the desktop app and on iOS. If your email address ends in @icloud.com, @me.com or @mac.com, ChatGPT can now work with your inbox and calendar in roughly the same way it already works with Gmail and Google Calendar.

What each plugin can do

MacRumors reports that the Mail plugin lets ChatGPT search and read your iCloud Mail, manage messages and drafts, send email and look up your iCloud contacts. The Calendar plugin can read your calendars, schedule new events and update existing ones, including events you see in the iPhone Calendar app or any other app that syncs with iCloud Calendar. None of the reports we read say that ChatGPT can delete calendar events, so treat that as unconfirmed.

OpenAI's own announcement, quoted by Engadget, gives the everyday use cases. You can ask ChatGPT to find a specific email, catch you up on your inbox, check what is next on your calendar or update an event. MacRumors adds that Dots, OpenAI's proactive agent, can use the iCloud access as well.

How to connect it

Apple does not let outside apps use your main Apple Account password for mail and calendar access, so both plugins use an app-specific password. The setup looks like this:

  • Make sure two-factor authentication is switched on for your Apple Account, because Apple requires it before you can create app-specific passwords.
  • Go to account.apple.com, open Sign-In and Security, choose App-Specific Passwords and generate a new one.
  • In ChatGPT, open Plugins and install iCloud Mail or iCloud Calendar.
  • Enter your iCloud email address and paste the app-specific password into the connection form. Never type your main Apple password there, and never paste any password into a chat.

Mail and Calendar connect separately, so installing one does not give ChatGPT access to the other. That is useful, because you can start with the calendar and add mail later once you trust how it behaves.

The limits worth knowing

The Mail plugin only sees your iCloud addresses. If you also read Gmail or Outlook inside Apple's Mail app, ChatGPT cannot see those accounts through this plugin. Neither Engadget nor MacRumors lists any regional restrictions, but managed work accounts may find that an administrator controls which plugins are allowed.

There are also two details about passwords that catch people out. Disconnecting a plugin inside ChatGPT does not cancel the app-specific password at Apple, so you should revoke it at account.apple.com when you stop using the plugin. And if you ever change your main Apple Account password, Apple cancels every app-specific password at once, so you will need to reconnect.

Four prompts to try

  • "Find the email from my landlord about the deposit and summarise it."
  • "Catch me up on everything that landed in my inbox today."
  • "What is on my calendar on Thursday, and where are the free gaps?"
  • "Move Friday's dentist appointment to next Tuesday at the same time."

What to do this week

Start with the calendar only. Connect iCloud Calendar, ask ChatGPT to find the free gaps in your week, and see how accurate it is before you connect your inbox. When you do add Mail, get into the habit of asking ChatGPT to show you a draft before it sends anything on your behalf. Our honest view is that this is worth turning on for busy iPhone users, as long as you keep the keys in your own hands.
