Alphabet shares fell 12.6% on Thursday, 29 October 2026, wiping out about $500 billion in market value. NBC News reported it was the company's worst one-day drop ever and the second-largest single-day loss of value for any US company, behind Nvidia's $589 billion drop in January 2025. CNBC described the fall as roughly 13%. The odd part is that the quarter itself was strong.
The quarter looked good on paper
Alphabet reported its third-quarter results on 28 October. TechCrunch reported revenue of $127.6 billion, up 25% from a year earlier. Google Cloud was the standout, with revenue up 103% to $30.7 billion. On most quarters, those numbers would send a stock up.
Shares slipped in after-hours trading on Wednesday, with TechCrunch noting an 8% fall right after the results, and the drop deepened when markets opened on Thursday.
The number that slipped was search
Search is still Google's biggest business, and its growth has slowed every quarter this year. CNBC reported that search revenue growth went from 19% in the first quarter to 17% in the second and 12% in the third. For a business that size, five points of slowdown in six months is a lot.
The reason investors cared so much comes down to AI Mode, Google's conversational search experience. On the earnings call, Alphabet's chief business officer, Philipp Schindler, referred to the lower monetization the company has been seeing in AI Mode. The Register and NBC both reported the remark. In plain terms, when people ask Google a question in AI Mode, Google currently earns less from ads than it does from a classic page of results.
Google's plan is to put ads inside AI answers
Google is not standing still. CEO Sundar Pichai said AI Mode queries are about three times longer than classic searches, which Google sees as a chance to catch more detailed commercial intent. TechCrunch reported that Google is scaling ads inside AI Overviews and AI Mode to more users and more international markets, with new multi-turn ad formats planned for the US.
At the same time, the spending keeps climbing. CNBC reported that Alphabet kept its 2026 capital spending guidance at $195 billion to $205 billion and expects spending to rise significantly again in 2027. Investors are now asking how long it takes for AI search to pay for itself, and Thursday's drop was the market's way of saying it wants a clearer answer.
What it means if your traffic comes from Google
For marketers and founders, the stock price is less important than the direction of travel. Search is turning into answers. Answers tend to send fewer clicks to websites, and they are starting to carry new kinds of ads. That combination affects both organic traffic and paid search budgets. Reddit made a similar point on the same day, saying its search referrals fell sharply in October, which we cover in Reddit is moving behind a login.
None of this means search is dying. Google says query volume is growing. It does mean the clicks that reach your site may come from a different place on the page, and some questions may never produce a click at all.
What to do this week
- Search your top five product questions in Google's AI Mode and write down whether your brand appears in the answer.
- Rewrite one key page so it answers a full, specific question, because AI Mode questions are longer than old keyword searches.
- Watch your paid search costs and placements as Google moves ads into AI answers.
- Grow one channel that Google does not control, such as a newsletter or a community.
Our honest view is that the companies that start measuring their visibility inside AI answers now will have a head start when the ad formats settle. To see how Google's AI tools compare with the alternatives, try Compare or the Gemini page in Learn.
