The short answer
Notion AI vs Gemini: pick Notion AI if your team's docs, wikis and trackers already live in Notion and you are on the Business or Enterprise plan, because Notion Agent answers from your whole workspace and Custom Agents run recurring work. Pick Google's Gemini for drafting, research and work inside Gmail and Docs, and for a real free plan. Notion AI is only a limited trial on Free and Plus, and existing customers move to credits on 2 November 2026.

Notion AI vs Gemini: two different answers to the same problem
Most teams do not lack information. They lack a quick way to find what was decided, turn meetings into tasks and keep documents up to date. Notion AI and Gemini both promise to fix that, from opposite directions.
Notion AI, made by Notion Labs, works on the pages and databases inside your Notion workspace. Its centre is Notion Agent, a chat assistant opened from the small face icon at the bottom of Notion that reads, creates and edits pages and databases. Custom Agents run in the background on schedules and triggers. Since 19 October 2026, agents have their own computer and browser and can work on a task for up to 24 hours. Under the hood, an Auto router picks the model, and you can choose models such as Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5 and GPT-6 Luna yourself.
Gemini, made by Google, is a general AI assistant that also sits inside Gmail, Docs, Drive and Calendar on paid plans. Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers get Gemini 4 Argon since 13 October 2026, while free accounts mostly get Flash-Lite since 9 October. Its knowledge tool is Gemini Notebook, formerly NotebookLM, which answers only from the sources you give it.
So the real question is where your team's knowledge lives. The verdicts below follow from that.
Team notes and knowledge: Notion AI wins
This is the reason to use Notion AI. Notion Agent sees what you can see in your workspace, and nothing more, so a question like "what did we decide about the pricing page in the last three weeks" is answered from your actual meeting notes and docs, and from Slack if it is connected. Use @ to point it at specific pages or databases, and the All sources menu to limit where it looks. Enterprise Search (Beta) on Business and Enterprise extends that to apps such as Slack, Google Drive and GitHub.
Gemini's closest equivalent is Gemini Notebook: you add PDFs, Google Docs, websites or videos and it answers only from them. That is excellent for a project or a research question, but it works on the sources you collect, while Notion AI works on the whole workspace your team already maintains. If your knowledge is in Notion, Notion AI wins; if it is scattered across Google Drive, see the Google section below.
Meeting notes: Notion AI wins, unless every meeting is on Google Meet
Type /meet on a Notion page in the desktop app and choose Start transcribing. AI Meeting Notes records both your microphone and the call audio without a bot joining, and gives you a transcript, a summary that links back to it, key points and action items in a meetings database. It supports 16 languages, with a limit of 10 hours per user per day, on Business and Enterprise. A Custom Agent that watches the meetings database can then file the action items in your task tracker.
Gemini has its own note taker for Google Meet. Since 29 June 2026, Take notes for me works in Meet calls hosted by Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers: it transcribes the call, saves notes to a Google Doc in Drive and emails a summary with action items. Eligible Google Workspace plans have it too. The difference is reach: Notion's desktop app captures Google Meet, Zoom and Microsoft Teams calls alike, and its notes land in a database a Custom Agent can act on. If your meetings are all in Google Meet, Gemini's version is enough; otherwise Notion's is the more complete loop from call to task, so Notion AI takes it.
Writing documents: Gemini wins
For drafting, Gemini is the better tool for most people, mainly because it is available. Its free plan includes Canvas, Google AI Plus puts Gemini in Gmail, and Google AI Pro adds Docs and Gemini 4 Argon. You can ask it to rewrite a section of a Doc or draft a reply to a long thread without copying anything.
Notion AI writes well inside pages through Notion Agent and AI blocks, and the drafts land exactly where your team will read them. The problem is access: on Notion's Free and Plus plans, Notion AI is only a limited trial. Unless your team already pays for Notion Business, Gemini is the better writing tool.
Research: Gemini wins
Gemini's Deep Research is on the free plan and writes a longer report with sources from many web pages, and Google AI Pro adds a 1 million token context window for long documents. Combine it with Gemini Notebook, reachable from any chat by typing @Gemini Notebook since 23 October, and you have web research and source-grounded answers in one place.
Notion has Research Mode for detailed reports, which is useful when the result should become a page in your wiki. For research as a job in itself, Gemini is the stronger and cheaper choice. Our best AI for research guide compares more tools.
Data and files: Notion AI wins for structured team data
Notion Agent can create databases, add views and properties such as relations, and query specific properties. Autofill fills properties across rows, such as a one-line summary or a category for every item in a feedback database. It reads uploaded PDF, CSV, XLSX, DOCX, PPTX and ZIP files and can hand back downloadable files. Since October, database owners can set column permissions so people and agents cannot see sensitive properties. Notion's help centre is honest about the gaps: the agent cannot build formulas, rollups or buttons, or create database automations.
Gemini is the better choice for a quick question about a file that already sits in Google Drive. For data a team maintains together, such as a project tracker, a feedback log or a CRM-style list, Notion AI wins because it works on the database itself.
Images, coding and other work: Gemini wins
Gemini creates and edits images on every plan with Nano Banana 2 (free) and Nano Banana 2.1 (Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra), generates video from Google AI Plus, and includes Google Antigravity for coding and prototyping in its macOS app. We could not confirm an image generator among Notion AI's documented features, and Notion is not a coding tool. If you need a general assistant as well as a knowledge tool, Gemini covers far more ground.
Working inside Google or Microsoft apps: Gemini wins
Gemini works inside Gmail, Vids and other Google apps from Google AI Plus, and inside Docs from Google AI Pro. Since 13 October, Pro and Ultra subscribers can switch the chat window to Tasks so Gemini keeps working across Google apps while they are away. For companies, the Gemini agent for Gemini Enterprise, announced on 8 October with no availability date yet, also connects to Microsoft 365, Slack, Salesforce and Jira.
Notion AI connects outward: Gmail and Google Calendar AI connectors are set up under Settings, Notion AI, Enterprise Search covers Google Drive, and since Notion 3.8 on 13 October agents can use more than 150 tools through MCP, such as HubSpot and Stripe. That makes Notion a good hub, but Gemini works inside the Google apps themselves, so it wins here.
Privacy: Notion AI wins
Notion says that by default neither Notion nor its AI providers use customer data to train any models, and that its contracts bar the providers from doing so; its security page lists no plan exceptions. There is no training switch to find. On Free, Plus and Business, the AI provider keeps data for 30 days or fewer; Enterprise uses zero data retention for most models.
Gemini on a personal Google account is different. With Keep Activity on (myactivity.google.com/product/gemini), Google uses activity for model training and human reviewers read some chats, which are kept for up to three years. With it off, chats are kept for 72 hours and not used for training unless you send feedback. Gemini through a Google Workspace account is much stronger: Google's Workspace Privacy Hub says content is not reviewed by humans or used for training outside your domain without permission. Even so, Notion's no-training default, with no switch to find, is the cleaner position.
Price and value: Gemini wins, unless your team is already on Notion Business
Gemini has a real free plan with Deep Research, images, Canvas and Gemini Notebook, and Google AI Pro bundles Gemini 4 Argon, Gemini in Gmail and Docs and 5 TB of storage. Notion AI in full needs the Business or Enterprise plan, and Free and Plus get only a limited trial.
Notion's AI also now runs on credits. Each Business and Enterprise seat includes 1,500 Standard credits and 500 Select credits a month; Standard credits pay for Auto, while Select credits pay for models you pick yourself and for Custom Agents. New customers moved on 19 October and existing customers move on 2 November 2026. Notion says most people will not run out, but heavy users of hand-picked models and teams with several Custom Agents might. On Business and Enterprise you can also connect your ChatGPT Plus or Pro plan to your personal Notion Agent. Check Notion's pricing page and Google's Gemini plans page for current prices.
Same task, both tools: a weekly project update
This describes how each tool approaches one realistic job, based on the features Notion and Google document. It is not a test result. The task: every Friday, your team needs a one-page update covering what was decided in this week's meetings, what moved in the project plan and what is blocked.
How Notion AI handles it
Meetings are recorded with AI Meeting Notes, so summaries and action items land in a meetings database. You then create a Custom Agent from Agents in the sidebar with a recurring trigger for Friday morning, point it at the meetings and project databases, and tell it what the update should contain and where to post it. It runs on Select credits. Turn on Review for me while you are testing, and check anything it posts in Slack before people rely on it.
How Gemini handles it
You would collect the week's meeting notes and project documents in Google Drive, or add them to a Gemini Notebook so the answers come only from them. On Google AI Pro you can ask Gemini to draft the update in a Google Doc, and save the instructions as a skill so the same request works the same way each week. With the Tasks toggle, where it has reached your Pro or Ultra account, Gemini can keep working on the job across your Google apps while you are away. Gemini can also run the request on a schedule: its Schedules feature allows up to 10 active schedules, needs Keep Activity switched on, and is still rolling out to personal accounts.
Which approach suits the job
If the team already lives in Notion, Notion AI does this end to end on the team's own databases, and a Custom Agent can even start when a meeting note is finished, which is the point of Custom Agents. If the team lives in Google Workspace, Gemini is the better fit, and moving everything into Notion just for this would cost more than it saves.
Who should pick Notion AI and who should pick Gemini
Pick Notion AI if your team's docs, wikis and trackers already live in Notion, you are on the Business plan or ready to move to it, you want meeting notes that turn into tasks, or you want agents that run recurring reports on their own.
Pick Gemini if your work runs on Gmail, Docs and Drive, you want a capable free plan, you do a lot of research, or you need a general assistant for images, writing and coding as well as knowledge work.
Not for you: Notion AI is a poor buy for individuals on Free or Plus, who get only a trial; a general assistant gives more for less. Gemini on a personal account is a poor home for confidential team notes unless you switch Keep Activity off or use Workspace.
Plenty of teams use both: Notion for the shared knowledge, Gemini for email and research. See Notion AI alternatives, Gemini alternatives, our guide to Gemini Notebook, or build a set of tools on Yuzoki stacks. Free lessons for both are on Notion and Gemini.
