The short answer
The best AI for podcasts in November 2026 is Descript, because you edit the episode by editing its transcript, Studio Sound and Remove Filler Words clean the audio, and its Underlord co-editor cuts clips from plain-language instructions. ElevenLabs is the runner-up for producing audio from a script, with Eleven v4 multi-speaker dialogue. Google's Gemini Notebook, formerly NotebookLM, is the best free option for turning documents into podcast-style Audio Overviews.
| Our pick | Descript (text-based editing, Studio Sound, Underlord) |
|---|---|
| Runner-up | ElevenLabs (Eleven v4 dialogue, Studio, Dubbing, Scribe v2) |
| Best free option | Gemini Notebook Audio Overviews (formerly NotebookLM) |
| Intro music | Suno (paid plan for commercial use) or Descript AI music |
| Video version | HeyGen Video Podcast or Descript's video editing |
| Free plans | Descript Free: 1 media hour a month with watermarked video; ElevenLabs Free: no commercial licence |
Our pick: Descript
Why: Descript, from Descript, Inc. in San Francisco, turns your recording into a transcript you edit like a document. Delete a sentence in the text and it disappears from the audio and video. On top of that sit the tools podcasters use every week: Studio Sound for one-click audio clean-up, Remove Filler Words for ums and long pauses, Create Clips for social cuts and captions. Its AI co-editor, Underlord, opens from the icon in the right sidebar and carries out edits you describe, from cutting to length to making vertical clips, and since October 2026 it describes its plan for the finished video in plain language before it edits. Since September 2026 it also generates background music and sound effects at a set length, and AI Speech, which runs on ElevenLabs v4 voices, lets you fix a misspoken line with a clone of your own voice.
Who it suits: interview and conversation podcasts, company podcasts and video podcasts where real people record and someone has to edit. Read our Descript guide.
The catch: AI credits run out faster than you expect, because each Underlord prompt costs credits for its reasoning plus any tool it runs, and the amount varies between runs. Underlord can also make wrong assumptions on complex edits, so review its plan before it acts. The free plan gives one media hour a month, a one-time 100 AI credits and 720p video exports with a watermark; full use of Studio Sound and filler removal starts on Hobbyist, as does audio dubbing in 30 languages, while translation proofreading is on Business. To keep your projects out of Descript's research data, open App Settings, then Profile, and switch off Share data with Descript.
Runner-up: ElevenLabs
Why: if your show is scripted, such as a daily briefing, an internal update or a narrated series, ElevenLabs can produce the audio without a microphone. Eleven v4, launched on 28 September 2026, handles multi-speaker dialogue (write "Speaker 1:" and "Speaker 2:" lines), 90+ languages and audio tags such as [laughs] or [short pause] that make hosts sound less like they are reading. Studio handles long-form projects, Dubbing Studio translates an episode into other languages, and Scribe v2 transcribes with speaker labels for up to 32 speakers if you need a transcript of a recorded show.
Who it suits: teams turning written content into audio, and podcasters who want translated editions. See our ElevenLabs guide and ElevenLabs vs Descript.
The catch: the Free plan has no commercial licence and no voice cloning, credits are shared across speech, dubbing and music, and cloning anyone else's voice needs their explicit, informed consent under ElevenLabs' Prohibited Use Policy. ElevenLabs uses certain data to improve its models unless you switch off Improve the models for everyone under your profile, Terms and privacy, Data use.
Best free option: Gemini Notebook Audio Overviews
Why: Gemini Notebook, which Google renamed from NotebookLM on 16 July 2026, turns the documents you add into an Audio Overview: a podcast-style conversation between two AI hosts. You can choose a format (the default two-host conversation, The Brief, The Critique or The Debate), a length (Shorter, Default or Longer, with Longer in English only), more than 80 languages and an optional focus prompt telling the hosts what to cover. In English, Interactive mode lets you ask the hosts questions by voice. The Standard plan is free with a Google account: 100 notebooks and 50 sources per notebook.
Who it suits: internal podcasts that summarise reports, onboarding packs, research or a week of meeting notes, and anyone who learns better by listening. Our Gemini Notebook guide covers the rest.
The catch: it is not your show. The hosts are AI voices, it only knows the sources you give it, and a notebook built on weak sources produces confident, well-cited audio that is still wrong. Use it for internal listening and drafts, and tell listeners it is AI-generated.
The rest of a podcast toolkit
- Intro and outro music: Suno makes a branded sting from a Styles box description; commercial use needs a paid plan when you make the song. Our best AI for music page covers the licences.
- A video version: HeyGen's Video Podcast turns a script, URL, PDF, doc or topic into a two-host video podcast, and Descript edits video podcasts the same way it edits audio.
- Show notes and titles: any chat assistant, such as Claude or ChatGPT, given the transcript Descript produces.
How to choose AI podcast tools: three questions
- Do real people record the show? Then the job is editing, and Descript is the pick. If the show starts as text, ElevenLabs or Gemini Notebook produce the audio.
- Is it public or internal? Public shows need commercial licences (paid ElevenLabs and Suno plans) and human hosts or clearly disclosed AI voices. Internal briefings can use Gemini Notebook's free Audio Overviews.
- Whose voices are you using? Your own voice can be cloned after the consent steps each tool requires. A guest's voice must never be cloned or "fixed" with AI without their explicit permission.
A workflow: from raw recording to published episode
- Record and import. Drop the recording into Descript and let it transcribe; check speaker names.
- Clean the sound. Apply Studio Sound, then run Remove Filler Words and review what it marks before accepting.
- Edit the story. Read the transcript, delete tangents and repeats as text, and ask Underlord to flag sections where a speaker loses the thread.
- Fix small mistakes. Correct a misspoken word with AI Speech in your own cloned voice, never a guest's without consent.
- Add music and clips. Add your intro sting, then ask Underlord for vertical clips with captions for social.
- Write the notes. Export the transcript and ask a chat assistant for a title, a summary, chapters and links mentioned, then check every claim and timestamp yourself.
Prompts that work for podcasts
Descript's Underlord takes plain-language edit instructions, Gemini Notebook takes a focus prompt when you customise an Audio Overview, and ElevenLabs takes the script itself with audio tags. Replace everything in [square brackets] except audio tags.
Prompts to copy
Descript Underlord: tighten a raw interview
Remove filler words and pauses longer than one second across the whole recording. Then flag any section where the speaker repeats themselves or loses the thread, but do not delete those yet. List the flagged sections with timestamps.

You get: A two-host audio briefing aimed at your listeners
ElevenLabs v4: two-host script segment
Speaker 1: [curious] Welcome back to [SHOW NAME]. Today we are looking at [TOPIC]. Speaker 2: [warm] And there is one number that surprised me. [short pause] [KEY FACT]. Speaker 1: [laughs] I did not expect that. Speaker 2: Neither did I. Here is why it matters: [REASON].
