The short answer
The best free ChatGPT alternative for most work in November 2026 is Claude Free from Anthropic, which gives you Claude Sonnet 5.5 with Projects, files, connectors and document creation, within limits that reset every 5 hours. Google Gemini has the most free features but mostly runs on Flash-Lite, Perplexity is best for cited research, Vibe hosts data in the EU, and DeepSeek and Qwen offer 1-million-token flagship models free, with data stored in China and Singapore.
Why people look for a free ChatGPT alternative
ChatGPT's free plan is generous on paper: OpenAI's pricing page lists unlimited text chats with GPT-6 Luna, subject to abuse guardrails. The limits show up elsewhere. Uploads, image creation, voice, deep research, memory and Codex are all limited on Free, the Instant context window is 27K tokens (about 12 pages of input), and the newest GPT-6.1 models live in ChatGPT Work and Codex on Plus and higher plans, not in the free Chat tab. Free and Plus chats can also be used for training unless you turn off Improve the model for everyone under Settings, Data controls.
So people look elsewhere for four reasons: a stronger free model for writing, more room for long documents, research with sources they can check, or a different privacy deal. No free plan wins on all four. The seven below each win on something specific, and each has a catch you should know before you move your work.

1. Claude Free: the best free alternative for writing and real work
Best for: writing, editing and working with files when the quality of the words matters.
Why: Anthropic's free plan gives you Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Claude Haiku 5.5, both released this autumn, plus web search, file creation, code execution, memory, connectors, Artifacts with Claude Design, Slides and Docs, and up to 5 Projects to keep context for ongoing work. That is more finished-work tooling than any other free plan here.
The catch: usage limits. Free resets every 5 hours with a weekly cap, so a long day of heavy work will hit the wall. There is no Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Code or Research on Free.
Free plan note: your chats can be used for training unless you switch off Help Improve our AI models under Settings, Privacy. Guide: how to use Claude.
2. Google Gemini: the most features for free
Best for: people in Gmail, Docs and Drive who want research, images and voice in one free app.
Why: the free Gemini app includes image creation and editing, Deep Research, Gemini Live voice conversations, Canvas and Gemini Notebook, with no subscription. Gems become read-only on 17 November 2026 and are converted to skills automatically.
The catch: since 9 October 2026, Auto sends most free prompts to Flash-Lite (harder prompts may go to Flash or Pro), and Google's flagship Gemini 4 Argon needs Google AI Pro or Ultra. Limits refresh every 5 hours up to a weekly limit. Gems are also being replaced by skills: on personal accounts they become read-only on 17 November 2026 and are removed on 17 December 2026, converted to skills automatically.
Free plan note: with Keep Activity on, Google uses your chats to improve its services, including training, and human reviewers read some of them. Turn it off at myactivity.google.com/product/gemini, or use Temporary chats. Guide: how to use Gemini.
3. Microsoft Copilot: the easiest free start on Windows
Best for: quick questions, images and file summaries for people who already have a Microsoft account.
Why: Microsoft offers a limited free version of Copilot, subject to available capacity, that covers chat and image creation; its paid plans promise higher usage than free for both.
The catch: agentic features such as advanced research need a paid Microsoft 365 plan, and Microsoft says only that Copilot uses AI models it selects. More importantly, Microsoft has not documented whether the updated personal app (from 18 August 2026) trains on conversations, and its privacy page lists no training switch. The personal app also cannot see your company files; only the work version does that under enterprise data protection.
Free plan note: fine for public material, not for anything private until Microsoft documents training. Guide: how to use Copilot.
4. Perplexity: the best free alternative for research you can check
Best for: looking things up and getting answers with citations you can click.
Why: the free plan gives cited answers for limited daily use, with Perplexity picking the model for each query. For fact-finding it is quicker to verify than a chat answer.
The catch: no model choice, limited file uploads and limited asset generation on Free, and Deep Research is listed only on the paid Pro and Max plans. It is a research tool, not a writing partner.
Free plan note: AI data retention is on by default, so your data can be used for training until you switch it off under Account settings, Preferences, AI data retention. Guide: how to use Perplexity.
5. Vibe (formerly Le Chat): the best free alternative for EU data hosting
Best for: people in Europe who want their data hosted in the EU and a free assistant with connectors.
Why: Mistral AI's free Vibe plan covers everyday tasks with capped messages and web searches, limited coding sessions, basic image generation, limited Libraries, up to five scheduled tasks and more than 100 connectors. Mistral says data is hosted in the EU by default.
The catch: the caps on messages and searches are tighter than the big three, Code Interpreter is paid only, and the product changed its name and modes in 2026, so older guides and menu names are often wrong.
Free plan note: individual plans train on your chats until you opt out. On mobile: Settings, Account, Data and Account Controls, untick Enable data sharing. Guide: how to use Vibe.
6. DeepSeek: the strongest free reasoning model, with a big catch
Best for: maths, logic, code and long public documents.
Why: DeepSeek is entirely free, with no paid consumer plan. The chat runs DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017 by default, Expert Mode switches to the larger DeepSeek-V4-Pro, and both take up to 1 million tokens of context, far more than ChatGPT Free's 27K.
The catch: DeepSeek's privacy policy says your data is collected, processed and stored in the People's Republic of China, under mainland Chinese law. In October 2026 a US order required federal civilian agencies to remove DeepSeek technology. Use it only for material that is already public.
Free plan note: switch off Improve the model for everyone in settings to stop training. Guide: how to use DeepSeek.
7. Qwen: a free flagship model with no sign-in
Best for: trying a top model on images, video, slides or web pages without creating an account (audio input needs a signed-in account).
Why: Alibaba's Qwen Chat lists Qwen3.8-Max (its flagship) and Qwen3.7-Plus as available to visitors who have not signed in, both with a 1-million-token context. Its modes cover web search, deep research, slides, web development, translation and image and video generation.
The catch: the privacy policy (effective 7 September 2026) lets de-identified chats train Qwen's models and offers no in-app switch, only a right to object by email to privacy@qwen.com. Data is stored in Singapore by a Singapore operator. Free limits are not published.
Free plan note: free to use; we found no official paid consumer plan. Guide: how to use Qwen, and see Qwen vs DeepSeek.
Which free ChatGPT alternative should you pick?
Our top pick is Claude Free for most professionals, because it gives you a current model (Claude Sonnet 5.5) with Projects, files, connectors and document and slide creation, which covers most of what people use ChatGPT for at work. Set it up with training switched off and accept that you will hit the 5-hour limit on heavy days.
- If you live in Google's apps or want free Deep Research and images, use Gemini.
- If your questions are about facts and you need sources, use Perplexity.
- If you are in the EU and data location matters, use Vibe.
- If you want the most capable model for free and the material is public, try DeepSeek or Qwen, never with confidential work.
Many people end up with two free tools: Claude or Gemini for writing, and Perplexity for checking facts. That costs nothing and covers more than any single free plan. If you want something you can run yourself, see open-source ChatGPT alternatives.
How to switch from ChatGPT without losing your work
- Export your ChatGPT data first. Use the export option in ChatGPT's data settings so you have a copy of your history before you stop using it.
- Copy your custom instructions and best prompts into a document. Every alternative here has a place to paste them: Claude Projects, Gemini skills, Vibe custom instructions.
- Write down what each custom GPT does. OpenAI retires custom GPTs on 11 December 2026 and moves them to plugins, so save each one's instructions and files and rebuild the ones you need as a Claude Project or a skill in your new tool.
- Move your memory by hand. Ask ChatGPT to summarise what it knows about your work, role and preferences, check the summary, and paste it into the new tool's instructions.
- Switch off training on day one using the settings named above. Claude, Perplexity and Vibe all train on free chats until you opt out, and Gemini does while Keep Activity is on.
- Run both for two weeks. Give the same real tasks to ChatGPT Free and your new pick, and keep the one you reach for. The free lessons at /learn include exercises for each tool.

Carry your context to a new assistant
Summarise everything you know about me that would help another AI assistant work with me: my role, the kinds of tasks I ask for, my preferred tone and format, and any standing instructions. Write it as a short set of custom instructions in the second person, and leave out anything sensitive or personal.
You get: A clean set of instructions to paste into your new tool

Here is a real task from my week with nothing confidential in it: [describe task and paste material]. Do it as well as you can. Then tell me in three bullets what you assumed and what you would need from me to do it better.
You get: A comparable output from each tool, plus the gaps each one noticed
